Black Strap Molasses - Dry Hair Cure

After my last pre-wash treatment I would like to proclaim that blackstrap molasses are the truth! My hair is usually tangled and dry after washing and I have to spend a further hour de-tangling, moisturising and twisting my hair when it is semi-dry to set it into a style.  So the question is, what is blackstrap molasses? Black strap molasses is a by-product of  sugar production made from cane or beets. So the health facts, molasses are loaded in nutrients they basically contain all the nutrients lost in the sugar refining process. Once in your cupboard it will be a great source of Calcium, Vitamins E and B, Magnesium, Iron and Copper. So where does the hair fit in? Well black strap molasses has been reported to restore hair colour and promote healthy hair.Well does it work I'm glad to say for me yes, Yes and YES. So if you are struggling dry tangled hair get yourself to your nearest health store its worth a try. My hair felt smooth, soft and it was wonderful.

  • 2 Tablespoons of  Black strap molasses
  • 1 Cup of Natural yoghurt
  • 1/4 Cup of Olive oil
  • 1/2 Bottle of conditioner ( depends on how much hair you have)

Mix it up and apply it to de-tangled hair as a pre-wash treatment. Cover your head with shower cap, in my case a plastic bag. Leave it in for an hour and do your usual wash and condition routine.Hope it leads you to soft tangle free hair.

My Hair Care Regimen

Here is my basic regimen for the week, I try my best to follow it week by week. However some days hair styles and treatments may hinder a process, such as applying henna or doing a twist out etc etc. Point is, WATCH your hair. Analyse it see how it's feeling, talk to it, get to know it. Give yourself a hair assessment daily, it only takes about 5-10 minutes, just to see what your hair needs.

How my chart works is simple, today being Friday, I'll see how my hair feels, if it's dry, I'll hydrate with glycerin spritz to add moisture, if it's brittle I'll deep condition. If it's oily I'll either put a bit of spritz on my hair or completely skip the step depending on how much oil is in my hair.

...Guess what?

Well Ladies over the past couple of months me and Regina have been doing a lot of research into products and ingredients that are 100% Natural (or close to 100%), to find that while there are a few out there, but there's not enough. There are a lot of products that are basically the same as other products but with different brand names, and those don't exactly do it for some people's hair, so they return to the harsh chemical stuff. And some do work for people's hair, but what about the ones who it didn't work for? Most natural products these days have Shea butter as a base. It is a very good moisturiser however it can be very heavy on the hair, especially if you tend to have an oily scalp. Another thing I've noticed with me personally, is that it doesn't last very long, my scalp can get dry pretty quick and though shea butter is good when it comes to oiling the scalp, it doesn't last too long before my scalp gets dry again, which really bugs me.

So we are taking it upon ourselves to produce products that tends to the needs the hair, keeping all hair types in mind.

Wedding Hair

Just thought I would share a style I wore to a wedding last weekend. It was really a last resort style, I had initially planned to wear my signature quiff but my hair kept flopping down. This was done with bobby pins on straightened hair. I pinned my hair to one side and did  two huge flat twists at the front. I have been wearing this style since the wedding, its simple and quick. Literally takes me three minutes to pin up my hair. Note to self: up-dos are you best friend!  Received loads of compliments, thumbs up. My cousins husband had been wondering if it was my hair or a wig  all day, he had a nice feel in the end.

Apart from a couple of people stopping me or just randomly coming up to me about my hair, the most memorable was at the train station yesterday. I was standing there, waiting for my train and out of nowhere beside me I heard in an west African accent "Jesus Christ is that your hair, please turn around let me see the back''. I obliged as usual and while twirling to put my eyes on this woman who looked absolutely amazed, the lady went on to ask more questions before boarding the train. This hair is taking over my life, I have conversations with people and they are talking to my hair not me, no eye contact nothing just the person and my hair. I now know how women with large busts feel with this large hair, but apart from being invisible to what is growing out of my scalp, I am grateful for it.

Gee, thanks for the information...but now that I've thrown 80% of my products away, what CAN I use?

Yes so now a lot of you are seeking alternatives from 'cancer catalystical products', and like I always say, NOTHING beats natural ingredients. Feel free to look at our Recipes section for information on how to make your own products, but first I shall share my alternatives.

CANCER CAUSING AGENTS IN YO COSMETICS!

So this morning I woke up right, and found this link on Regina's facebook page: Cosmetics Companies Sued For Mislabeling Organic Products

After reading it, I decided to do more research into chemicals in cosmetics that are linked with cancer. What did I find? I found out that there are way more products that needed to be avoided than I originally knew, and if I didn't know, there's a likely chance that ya'll don't know either, so I'ma spread the word.

Firstly I'm aware that shampoos and hair conditioners usually contain chemicals, that's why I tend to over look them during purchase. THAT is a big no no, check the ingredients, and do your research. There are a handful of toxic chemicals that are found in cosmetic products which is damaging to your body, and you need to know what they are so you can avoid them.

To understand how these ingredients can cause cancer, you must first know what a Carcinogen is.

What is a Carcinogen?

A carcinogen is a substance that is capable of causing cancer in humans or animals. If a substance is known to promote or aggravate cancer, but not necessarily cause cancer, it may also be called a carcinogen. Though there are many things that are believed to cause cancer, a substance is only considered carcinogenic if there is significant evidence of its carcinogenicity.
